New Texas Startup is Disrupting the Toothbrush Industry

Studies show that 2 out of 3 people brush their teeth too hard, which can lead to sensitive teeth, enamel erosion (making teeth more likely to stain), and receding gums. But Zent has figured out how to change that!s changing that!

Recognizing that this is a real problem for adults and kids alike, Zent set out to design a simple, elegant, affordable solution for anyone who wants to ensure they’re not doing more harm than good while brushing their teeth. The optimal amount of pressure to effectively remove plaque and tarter without causing stress on teeth and gums is 150 grams. However, according to Dr. Peter Heasman, "It is virtually impossible for the average user to gauge how much pressure they are applying during their brushing regime.”

“But I have an electric toothbrush so I’m all set.” Studies show that electric toothbrushes aren’t any better than manual toothbrushes when used correctly. The ADA (American Dental Association) says unless you have trouble using your hands, a manual toothbrush is just as effective as an electric. And Consumer Reports dental adviser Jay W. Friedman, D.D.S., M.P.H. says, “it really doesn’t matter which brush you use.” Just don’t get carried away. “Excessive brushing with manual or electric has its risks,” Friedman says. “Too much pressure and too frequent brushing can abrade enamel, or the root if the gum has receded.” This abrasion, he says, can cause teeth to become hypersensitive to hot and/or cold. In fact, electric toothbrushes can actually cause more damage than manual toothbrushes if even a small amount of excess pressure is applied. This makes sense because of all the extra power.

The Zent Flex™ toothbrush has a patent-pending flex joint that limits brushing pressure to that magic 150 grams no matter how hard you push. When you do press too hard, it “clicks” back and automatically returns to normal once you brush with the right pressure.

The designers at Zent also thought about the handle shape, raised head, and the bristles. The handle’s flat design prevents roll-over and contact with germs. For the best in bristles, they use soft, 0.7-millimeter nylon made in the USA providing the very best in safe and effective cleaning that last up to 2x longer than other brushes.

Zent Flex is available on their website or on Amazon.
